Shopify · 2.4.2 Page Titled (Level A)

Page has no title on Shopify

The page has no <title>, or the title is empty. The title is the first thing a screen reader announces on load and it is how a shopper tells one open tab from another. An untitled page is announced only by its URL.

Which WCAG criterion this fails

  • Does not meet 2.4.2 Page Titled (Level A)

How to fix it on Shopify

Everything below is done from Online Store > Themes > Edit code. Take a copy of the theme before editing.

  1. Open layout/theme.liquid and confirm the <head> contains a <title> block.
  2. Standard Shopify pattern: {{ page_title }}{% if current_tags %} …{% endif %}{% unless page_title contains shop.name %} &ndash; {{ shop.name }}{% endunless %}.
  3. If an SEO app manages titles, check the app rather than the theme — editing the theme will be overwritten.
  4. Set per-page titles in admin: each product, collection and page has an SEO section with a "Page title" field.
  5. Make titles unique and front-load the distinguishing word: "Navy Merino Sweater – Store" beats "Store – Navy Merino Sweater".

Where this usually lives

layout/theme.liquid <head>, and the SEO fields on each product/collection/page in admin

Paths given for Dawn and its derivatives (Sense, Craft, Refresh, Studio). A heavily customised theme may differ; the CSS selector in your scan report points at the exact element.

Code

<title>
  {{ page_title }}
  {%- if current_tags %} &ndash; {{ current_tags | join: ", " }}{% endif -%}
  {%- unless page_title contains shop.name %} &ndash; {{ shop.name }}{% endunless -%}
</title>

How to confirm it is fixed

Re-run the scan. This rule should drop out of the findings entirely. If the instance count falls but does not reach zero, the same defect exists in another template — product cards and quick-view modals are the usual second home for it.

Effort: low. Rule id: document-title (axe-core).
